Weehawken Squeezes Past St. Mary’s

Weehawken High School winning the tip-off.

Weehawken defeated St. Mary’s High School in a nail biter, 36-34.

Weehawken, currently ranked first in their league took an early lead against St. Mary’s. Led by senior combo guard Alexsa Ruiz, Weehawken is a team built mostly of guards. They are tenacious, quick, and look to score from the outside. Ruiz finished with 10 points.

St. Mary’s Janea Kelty finished with 20 points. Here is a video of her scoring at the buzzer of the first quarter to lessen the Weehawken lead, 16-9.

Weehawken had a strong second quarter.

They led 25-13 at the half.

St. Mary’s came out with a better strategy in the second half. Alyssa Whalen played strong defense inside, boxed out, blocked shots, and pulled down rebounds.

St. Mary’s outscored Weehawken 11-5 in the third quarter.

Jenna Kraft added two much needed three point shots.
St. Mary’s had a huge fourth quarter and took the lead with 34 seconds left in the game.

With a one point lead, 34-33, St. Mary’s fouled, which sent Weehawken straight to the foul line. Alexsa Ruiz made one to tie the game, 34-34.

A huge drive by Weehawken earned them the lead back.

Nicole Molano finished with 12 points.

St. Mary’s was able to put up a few desperation shots with 3 seconds left, but none fell.
