The Ray Long Classic was held on January 6, 2018 at Felician University in Rutherford, New Jersey. The tournament featured eight teams and four games.

The first game of the day featured Mt. St. Dominic and Irvington High School. Mt. St. Dominic won 64-49, but not without some drama.

MSD had the lead at the half, 34-28. Mt. St. Dominic’s Abigail Garaban scored 22 points, which included two outside shots. Juliet Howell added 10 points. Irvington’s Briana Lee is great at attacking the basket. She had 18 points. Tiara Mahorn 16 points, 7 steals, and 4 assists. She is a tenacious on-the-ball defender who is good at anticipating. Aniyah Massey dominated in the post and scored 10 points. In the fourth quarter Irvington tied up the game, 46-46.

Unfortunately, with just a few seconds left in the third quarter, a jump ball on the baseline led to a fight. Fans poured onto the court and a woman from the Irvington crowd assaulted a player from MSD. One player from MSD was ejected and two players from Irvington were ejected. In the fourth quarter, Irvington was unable to make any runs without their two strongest players. MSD out-scored them 13-3.

In the second game of the day, Bayonne High School defeated Marist High School, 56-53. Marist’s Breyanna Frazier had 11 points and dazzled the crowd with her great moves to the basket before getting injured.

Nia Scott was able to pick up the slack for her team while they were missing Frazier’s presence on the court. She had 20 pints, which included five three point shots. Bayonne’s Makoye Diawara and Eniya Scott both had great games. Diawara had 21 points and 25 rebounds. Scott had 20 points and 4 assists.

The third game of the day featured Pope John and Lincoln High School. Pope John pulled out the 41-39 win. Pope John’s Kenna Squier is great around the basket. Squier finished with 17 points. She gets rebounds and goes up strong. Alana Robinson has a nice jump shot; she finished with 13 points.

Lincoln works the ball around for the most open shot. They are good at finishing from inside, but can also skip pass for an outside shot. Lincoln’s Tymira Miller had 12 points, Alaisha Mumford had 9.

The final contest of the day was between the host team, Immaculate Conception (Lodi) and Donovan Catholic. Donovan Catholic won 38-34 with Paige Slaven leading the team with 13 points. Jayda Kearney was trailing close to her with 11 points. For IC, Kelina Menard pumped in 12 points. She also did a great job running the point.

Donovan Catholic started with an early lead against IC, winning at the half 20-9. IC played a strong third quarter, 13-4. They were able to tie up the game in the fourth quarter, but Donovan was able to win it back.
