LAKEWOOD – Brick Township exploded for five runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to cruise past Brick Memorial 7-1 Friday night at First Energy Park.
The big inning was kick-started by six consecutive singles to open up the frame and turn a tie game into a 6-1 edge for the Green Dragons. Mike Brunner and Joe Guerra each hit back-to-back two run singles through a drawn in infield.
Tyler Skurat capped the inning with an RBI single – his second of the night after his SAC fly in the fourth knotted the score at 1-1.
The Mustangs opened the scoring in the second inning after Mike Sullivan led off with a walk and was able to get to third. Graham Harrigan drew a walk three batters later and with first-and-third and two out, he got caught in a run-down – allowing Sullivan to cross the plate before the final out was recorded.
The heads up base running was all that would blemish Brunner during the evening. He would go 2-for-4 at the plate with the two run single and a seventh inning double. On the mound, Brunner went the distance, allowing only three hits and one run while striking out two.
Mustang’s starter Nick Stephan cruised through the first three innings, scattering three base runners (one was erased on a double-play) and picking up a strikeout.
In the bottom of the fourth, Skurat’s SAC fly to center brought home John Coppola after he hit a one out triple.
Stephan would run in to trouble in the fifth and would exit going four-plus innings allowing five runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out three.
Harrigan would finish the game on the mound for Brick Memorial, allowing two runs on five hits over the final two innings.
Guerra would cap the scoring in the sixth with a SAC fly for his third RBI of the game.
The Dragons 12-hit barrage would be led by Vin Galdieri, who went 4-for-4 with a stolen base while scoring two runs. Brunner and Coppola each notched two hits a piece, while Guerra, Skurat, Mike McGuigan and Cole Groschel each had one.
Guerra had a game high three RBI, while Skurat and Brunner each drove in two.
Memorial got singles from TeeJay Rosace to open the game, as well as from Mark Defelice and Mike Murphy.
Brick Memorial falls to 4-6 overall and are still looking to pick up an A-South win at 0-5. They will take the trip to Southern Regional on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. for their next contest.
