Elena Pulanco Hits Buzzer Beater to Lead Holy Angels to the 2nd Round of the Bergen County Tournament

Holy Angels in the first round of the Bergen County Tournament 2018.

The Academy of the Holy Angels (16th Seed) defeated Hackensack High School (17th Seed), 51-49, when Elena Pulanco hit a three-point shot at the buzzer. This was in the first round of the BCWCA’s Bergen County Tournament. Holy Angels will take on the first seed, Saddle River Day, in the second round.

Despite having almost the same roster as last year, Hackensack is a new and improved team. Last year they finished with a record of 6-18 and began their season by losing the first 7 games of the season. This season they are already off to a 4-7 record, with wins over Ridgewood, St. Joseph Hill (NY), Paramus, and Teaneck. They are disciplined and work hard for the most open shot.

Hackensack’s Kyara Cowan led her team with 16 points. She is the most versatile player on the team. She can play with her back to the basket and from the outside. She is quick on her feet and explodes to the basket. She is also good at drawing fouls and finishing. Hackensack led at the end of the first quarter 15-11.

Caleigh Golabek has improved tremendously. She is a big force in the paint and can finish with either hand. She had 10 points. Hackensack still had the lead at the half-time, 27-21.

Holy Angels’ Colby Debellis kept her team in the game with her three point shots. She nailed four three-pointers to finish with 12 points. She also had 3 assists and 2 steals.

Holy Angels made some big adjustments during the half-time. They came back stronger for the second half. They out-scored Hackensack 14-6 in the third quarter to take the lead going into the fourth, 35-33.

In addition to hitting the game winning shot, Elena Pulanco led the team with 13 points.

She can really jump and also finished with 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals, and 2 blocked shots.

With about 50 seconds remaining in the game Hackensack led 47-45. Holy Angels’ Caroline Staff hit a deep two point shot from the corner. She finished with 8 points.

Hackensack then had the lead 47-46. Hackensack had the ball back and Gena Kaminski attacked the seam and scored a tough lay-up. Kaminski finished with 10 points. Hackensack led 49-46. Holy Angels returned and attempted a three point shot, but it did not fall. They got the offensive rebound, put up another shot, but it did not go in. They got a second rebound and scored. They again trailed by one point, 49-48. With only 3.6 seconds left in the game Hackensack set up a press breaker. They inbounded the ball to the ball-side short corner where Holy Angels trapped and was awarded the jump ball. From there Holy Angels set up the play that freed up Elena Pulanco to hit the game winning three-point shot from the weak-side corner.
