Newark Tech Played Hard at the Rose Classic Super Jam

The Mary Louis Academy and Newark Tech before the game.

The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA) defeated Newark Tech, 55-42, at the Rose Classic Super Jam. The tournament was held at Nazareth High School in Brooklyn, NJ, over the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend (January 13-15, 2018).

Newark Tech won the following awards:

  • Abbey Lawrence: Most Valuable Player
  • Caitlin Townes: Sportsmanship
  • Mariah Perez: Scholar Athlete

All three players are huge reasons the team is successful. Lawrence has unlimited energy and never stops moving on defense. She can hound the ball and chase down rebounds. She is good at scoring from the outside, but can also drive to the basket.

Townes is a good distributor and three-point shooter. Mariah Perez is a huge factor inside. She has a variety of post moves and a nice jump shot.

TMLA is a great team led by McDonald’s All American and future Notre Dame player Jordan Nixon.

Jordan Nixon is a very strong player who can attack into the lane and put up shots while drawing fouls. She also has good court vision and is able to skip pass it to open players.

At the end of the first quarter TMLA led 10-5.

At the half-time the score was 23-17 with TMLA in the lead. Newark Tech did a good job breaking the press and passing to earn open shots. At the end of the third quarter they trailed by three points, 38-35.

Fouling to stop the clock increased the TMLA lead deep into the fourth quarter.
