The Battle in Bergen County’s 2017 1-on-1 Winners

One-on-one champion for the 5th and 6th grade division.

The Battle in Bergen County sponsored a free 1-on-1 competition in Lodi, NJ in April 2017. The competition were for all girls’ basketball players from the grades 1st-12th. Anyone interested was allowed to participate for free. The tournament was a single-elimination tournament and each game lasted 5 minutes or until an opponent scored 10 points. Players were broken up into five divisions: 3rd grade and under, 4th grade, 5th and 6th grade, 7th and 8th grade, and 9th through 12th grade. Within those divisions,

In the 4th grade and under division 16 players participated. Third grader Emma McHugh from Tappan, NY, won the bracket of third grade and under players.

Emma McHugh defeated three strong players to earn this win. Emma is a strong lefty who is good at getting around her defender to score lay-ups. In the championship game she defeated 2nd grade Dalia Interiano from River Edge, NJ. Dalia is a smart player who has a consistent jump shot.

Kendralee Ramirez from North Bergen, NJ won the 4th grade division. Kendralee is strong for her age and can both attack the basket and shoot from the outside. She is also a good defender. Kendralee defeated Kristen Phelan from Tappan, NY in the championship game. Kristen has a high basketball IQ and is good at using a change of speed and direction to go to the basket.

The 5th and 6th grade bracket had 30 participants pooling from Rockland, Bergen, Hudson, Passaic, and Essex Counties. Fifth grader Olivia Palladino from River Edge, NJ defeated seven opponents, which included four sixth graders, in order to win the competition. Olivia is another strong lefty who is good at getting past defenders. She can also pull up for a jump shot. Olivia defeated 6th grade Gabby DeGroat from River Edge, NJ in the championship game. Gabby is a strong post player who is good at finishing inside and getting rebounds.

The 7th and 8th grade bracket had 16 participants. An 8th grader from Tappan, NY, Shannon Phelan, won the championship against 8th grade Justise Jones from Hackensack, NJ. Shannon defeated four opponents to win the tournament. She is a strong guard who is good at scoring from both inside and outside. She can also use her dribble to get open. Justise is a center who earns every rebound that falls. She is strong going up with both hands.

In the high school division there were 14 participants, all from the following high schools: Pascack Valley High School (Hillsdale, NJ), Academy of the Holy Angels (Demarest, NJ), Paramus High School, Lodi High School, Union City High School, Westwood Regional High School, New Milford High School, Immaculate Conception High School (Lodi, NJ), and Saddle Brook High School. Eleventh grade Brianna Wong, who verbally committed to Pace University this past spring, won the tournament. She is a lightning fast guard who is great at beating opponents off the dribble. She defeated 12th grade Khay’la Latimer from Teaneck, NJ in the championship. Khay’la is a very versatile player who can score from anywhere. She will be playing for Dominican College this year.
