The New Milford High School girls’ basketball team defeated Newton High School, 62-39, in the first round of the NJSIAA’s North 1 Group 2 State Tournament.

New Milford, led by point guard Bionca Chambers won their first Group 2 tournament game on February 27, 2017. In the past New Milford always played in the Group 1 section, but was moved up to Group 2 this year. Chambers showed why she is one of NJ’s top leaders in assists:

She had 12 assists and 16 points. New Milford led at the end of the first quarter, 14-7.

KC Toledo had 11 points, which included two three-point shots. Vianca Soriano had 11 rebounds and 9 points. Soriano was a great floor leader who communicated the entire game to her team. New Milford led at the half, 34-15.

Newton High School had difficulty penetrating the New Milford defense. The guards tried to swing the ball to look for open scoring opportunities. In the second half their full court press stopped New Milford a few times. Kaitlyn Lynch and Jasmine Luciani did a great job of rebounding and looking for open shots.
