Zyhier Jones and Jyhier Jones would effectively be all Lakewood needed to roll past Donovan Catholic on Saturday, as they hit on explosive plays at will on their way to three first-half touchdowns.
The latter passing strike came just before halftime, and put the Piners up 20-0. Donovan Catholic would answer, powering the football with their big offensive line and Matt Baltus at running back.
Baltus would be effective all game long, but the patient offense of the Griffins did little to keep up with the explosiveness of Lakewood. His touchdown would come on a short drive before the end of the half, as Donovan Catholic took advantage of a short kickoff.
Staying one step ahead was the home team though, as Lakewood’s Honore Richardson broke an 89-yard return on the ensuing kickoff, setting up a walk-in score for Zyhier Jones from a yard out.
Leading 26-7 at the half, the Piners would go on to win 52-14, as they continued to take advantage of every opportunity offensively. Adi Palmer would catch a touchdown in the back of the end zone to extend the lead on the first drive of the third quarter, followed by the Lakewood defense making their lasting impact.
A fumble return for a score on a Griffins’ fourth down play all but shut the door on this B-South match up at 39-7. Richardson and Bonaparte accounted for the other two Piners’ scores, as Clark scored on a QB keeper for Donovan in the fourth quarter.
The Lakewood Piners will hit the road for their next three games, playing at Jackson Liberty on the 23rd before returning home to face Brick on October 22nd.
Donovan Catholic will enter another divisional match up with Point Pleasant Boro at home on the 23rd.
