In Central Jersey Group 2 playoff baseball action, the second seeded Point Pleasant Borough Panthers defeated Holmdel 7-3 on their home field for a first round victory.
With this win under their belts, the Panthers will now look ahead to Wednesday and Thursday, where they will face RBC on the road with a trip to the Shore Conference Semifinals on the line before regrouping for a rivalry game with Manasquan in the second round of states.
The 7th seeded Manasquan Warriors defeated Spotswood 2-0 in first round action earlier today.
Frank Graziano led the way for Point Boro in this game both on the mound and in the batter’s box, as his 3-3 day with 3 RBIs drove a Panthers’ offense that constantly put pressure on the Hornets.
Holmdel would actually score in the top of the first inning off of Graziano in this game to gain an early lead, before Boro plated two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Graziano made the most of this run support before handing the ball to Mike Falconetti, who closed out the game over the final 3 innings.
Falconetti also picked up 2 RBIs in this game, as the top four of the Panthers order exploded for 9 of the team’s 10 hits and all 7 runs batted in.
Second basemen Bill Feehan scored 3 times for the Panthers.
“We just want to make sure that we played the game we are capable of playing. Frank has been great for us both offensively and defensively, and he was on the mound because we wanted to win today. RBC is great, and we’re now looking forward to trying to beat a great team.” – Point Boro Head Coach Dave Drew after the win.
Our reporter Jim Rosa also had a chance to talk with Graziano after the game, and you can listen to his thoughts right here:
