Middletown South’s hockey team won their first round game of the Shore Conference Tournament 7-2 over St. Rose. The Eagles did not hesitate to control the game as they started the game with a bang, scoring 3 goals in the first 8 minutes of the game and all three of them within 2 minutes. And they did not slack off at the end either. With leading 5-2 after the second period they withstood a fierce attack by the Purple Roses at the start of the third, but team defense and goalie Clay Simonsen held them off and scored two of their own in the period to put away the game.

St. Rose never recovered from the 3-0 deficit midway through the first period. Ryan Smith scored St Rose’s goal in the first, his first of the season, but the Purple Roses could not get the puck to the back of the net again until Phipps (16-16-32) scored with less than two minutes left in the second to make it 5-2. Goalie Will Lemoine stopes 23 of the 30 shots faced, but with the screens and some sharp shooting by the Eagles, he was at a disadvantage through most of the game.
