The Middletown South Eagles have once again punched their ticket to the Sectional Final. Although the Eagles have compiled some pretty impressive wins; it took one more against their crosstown rival to send them back to the championship. For Middletown South, it was a combination of QB Matt Mosquera and RB Cole Rogers who were able to dominate the game throughout a 41-14 victory over Middletown North.

Defensively, Middletown South was able to overcome a Middletown North offense that put up nearly 400 yards. Quarterback Donald Glenn threw for 281 yards, including a 55 yard play to Brandon Kube. Kube had a career night, catching 13 passes for 222 yards. Tom Coffey and Max Imsho both came up with two key interceptions for the Eagles which would keep the momentum in their favor. Altogether, Middletown South forced four turnovers as a unit. The best teams will find a way to win when facing adversity. That is exactly what the Eagles did tonight!

Cole Rogers would get the game started in the first quarter with a 28 yard TD run which would give the Eagles an early 6-0 lead. This Middletown South offense has been clicking for the entire season, and had no sign of slowing down. By the end of the first quarter, the Eagles would take a 14-0 lead after a Spencer Pereless touchdown reception.

Matt Mosquera connected with Tom Coffey for a 5 yard touchdown to give Middletown South a 20-0 edge doing into the locker room. Defensively, the Eagles were able to limit the Lions offense in the first half by playing physical. Linebackers Dylan Rogers and James McCarthy were all over the field and swarming to the ball. This was exactly how the Eagles have been able to set the tone all season long.

Cole Rogers would pick up right where he left off with a 3 yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Middletown North had a lot of trouble trying to contain Rogers all night. This would make the score 27-0 before the Lions would get on the board via a Chad Freshnock 2 yard TD run.

The Lions were willing to fight back with their passing game. Quarterback Donald Glenn hit Wide Receiver Brandon Kube for a 55 yard scoring play. While it looked as if Middletown North would be back in the game, the Eagles had other plans.

Both Mosquera and Rogers made sure the Lions did not get any closer. The Eagles offense game out and took control again. Cole Rogers added to the lead as his 33 yard TD in the third quarter made the score 33-14 at the 3 minute mark.

It was Rogers who would deliver the final blow, scoring his 4th touchdown of the game from the three yard line to seal the deal for the Eagles. Rogers turned in a stellar performance, finishing with 212 yards on 20 carries. Middletown South is nearly unstoppable when Rogers is having a big day!

On the Win QB Matt Mosquera said,”The offensive line did a great job. Cole found all the holes. Being able to check into the right plays was the key”. He also credited the defense as well, saying ” We knew that they were going to have to throw everything at us. They hit us with some trick plays, but our defense hung in there and got some key turnovers and stops.” He knew that it would be a challenge as his team hung in to come away with the victory.

Now the Eagles will face Phillipsburg in the North Jersey Section II Group IV Championship Game. Phillipsburg is the No 2 seed in the tournament. However, the Eagles will get set to clash with Middletown North one more time on Thanksgiving Day. The Eagles will win Class A North outright with a win. Middletown North can get a share of the crown with an upset. It will be interesting to see both these programs meet for the second time in six days!
