Central Jersey Group II Outlook

It’s hard to believe that the playoffs are finally here! This is the time of year that everyone has been waiting for. Today, we will look at the Central Jersey Group II bracket. This section has quite a few interesting teams that are ready to make their mark in December. Lincoln is an offense with a lot of fire power. Delaware Valley is your typical ground and pound type of a team. Pt Pleasant Boro just won a division title for the first time since 2008. We will look at how the last few weeks’ will break down!

The Favorite

Lincoln – Everyone following football in North Jersey cannot help but notice the dominance of the Lincoln Lions football team. The Lions have ripped through their schedule with nine straight wins! Offensively, Lincoln has piled up nearly 3,000 yards of offense with no sign of slowing down. Defensively, the team is among the best in the state with only giving up 5 points per game. With two big time D1 players on the roster, the Lions have the athleticism to run with anyone.

University of Iowa commit Frank Darby is one of the most talented players in the country. Darby has break away speed on the outside, and can make all the tough catches over the middle. The Senior has caught 24 passes, for 775 yards and 9 touchdowns. Dual threat Quarterback Zymire Gordon leads the Lincoln offense. Gordon has thrown for 1360 yards and 19 touchdowns through the air. Kamani Addison and Ronnie Young boost the running attack. Will anyone in the bracket be able to slow Lincoln down?  Roselle will have the first shot.

The Contenders

Delaware Valley – The Terriers have been waiting a whole year for this opportunity. After making it all the way to the sectional final, the team was shutout 21-0 by Rumson Fair Haven. Delaware Valley is your typical smash mouth football team that relies on a strong offensive line and running attack to control the game. A standout defense has also helped the Terriers only surrender 90 total points on the season.

Running Back Corey Shellock has been the face of the offense for the Terriers. Shellock is a strong runner between the tackles, piling up 1,006 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. Quarterback Joe Donnelly, and Ryan Romaine have also contributed to the running game. Delaware Valley must have a strong defensive performance to get into another sectional final. They will be tested by a very hungry Spotswood team who can make big plays on Friday.

Pt Pleasant Boro – 2015 has been a very exciting year for Pt Pleasant Boro football. For this very talented group of seniors, all the hard work and determination is finally starting to payoff in a huge way. Under the leadership of Head Coach Sean Henry, the Panthers have gone from 1-9, to 5-5, and now a division title with an 8-1 record. This is their first Shore Conference Class B South Championship since 2008. Now the team will look to take that success a step further. Will the Panthers walk away with a sectional trophy?

The Panthers are led by the option attack of Noah and Nathan Husak. Noah has rushed for over 700 yards and 13 touchdowns on the season. Devin Connelly and Hayden Frey both provide reliable targets on the outside when Pt Boro needs to get the passing game going. Defensively, they are standout against the run. This past weekend, they held Lakewood Running Back Amir Tyler to just 41 yards on 14 carries. Pt Boro will begin their playoff run on Friday against a familiar opponent, the Raritan Rockets. The Panthers defeated Raritan 33-27 during the regular season.

Key Underdog

Spotswood – Spotswood will definitely be a team to watch on Friday night. Can they do the unthinkable and pull off the upset at Delaware Valley? They come into the playoffs riding the momentum of a 4 game winning streak. Quarterback Shawn O’Connor has a big arm and knows when to take chances down the field. The signal caller has thrown for 1159 yards and 7 touchdowns. Joe Hayford leads a punishing running game with 659 yards and 14 touchdowns. Spotswood also has a defense that held undefeated Shore to just 7 points earlier in the year. Even though Spotswood comes into the tournament as a 7 seed, don’t take them lightly!
