Week 9 Preview And Picks

It’s hard to believe that we are already up to Week 9 in the Shore Conference. This week is full of action as division titles and playoff positions are on the line. Asbury Park will travel to West Long Branch where they will take on an undefeated Shore team. Both the Class B Central and No 1 seed in Central Jersey Group I are on the line. Both Brick and Brick Memorial can get a share of Class A South with wins over Toms River South, and Southern respectively. Pt Pleasant Boro hopes to get at least a share of Class B South when they host Lakewood on Saturday.

Asbury Park (6-1) at No 9 Shore (7-0)

Asbury Park comes into West Long Branch with a six game winning streak. First year Head Coach Tim Fosque has re-energized the Blue Bishops football program. The team has gotten better each and every week, and they have a level of confidence that wasn’t there before.

Quarterback Davon Thompson is a big time weapon who can not only get the ball down the field with his big arm, but can take off for big plays. Donte Adams and Jadeon Stephens give Thompson the targets that he needs to score quickly.

Shore is a team that likes to get it done the old fashioned way by playing good defense and running the football. Doug Goldsmith is a bruising back that can power his way between the tackles. He is always available to carry the load when needed. Jack Britton, and Alex Johnson are also a huge part of the rotation. They are a threat to score every time you put the ball in their hands.

Quarterback Matt Pennell brings great leadership to the huddle. He knows how to direct this offense, and can make something happen with his arm when needed. Shore is currently averaging 38 points per game.

The biggest difference in the game will be whether Shore can contain the big plays from the Asbury Park offense. Shore has an outstanding group of linebackers that can fly to the ball. They will have to keep their eyes on Davon Thompson because it’ll be hard for the secondary to stay with Stephens or Adams. At the same time, will Asbury Park be able to stop Shore from controlling the clock? Time of possession will be a big factor, and the Blue Devils will rely on their three headed monster to keep the Blue Bishops offense off the field.

The Pick – Shore 24, Asbury Park 14

(6-1) Lakewood At Pt Pleasant Boro (7-1)

This will be one of the best games of the year. Lakewood has at least clinched a tie for the Class B South title with their win over Barnegat last week. The bigger question is, how will Pt Pleasant Boro respond after suffering a very unexpected loss to Jackson Liberty? The setback cost Pt Boro a chance to win the division outright, and more than likely a home playoff game. This is the opportunity for the Panthers to come out and make a statement.

Lakewood will rely on running back Amir Tyler. Tyler is one of the fastest playmakers in the Shore and has tremendous agility. He has great hands and the ability to make acrobatic catches. The Panthers defense must be aware of him at all times. Quarterback Zyhier Jones can also make it very tough on a defense. The dual threat Quarterback is having a productive season and will continue to get better. Jyhier Jones and Adi Palmer have been consistent targets for Zyhier.

Pt Pleasant Boro relies on the option with brothers Noah and Nathan Husak. Noah has a very strong arm and can get the ball down the field. He can also really hurt a defense with the ability to pull the ball on the read option. Nathan Husak is a strong runner, and Gene Fransceschini gives the Panthers another option out of the backfield. Can the Boro defense led by Austin Drucquer, and Dom Infante control Amir Tyler and company? A chance to share the Class B South title is on the line!
