Moorer’s 4 TDs Lift Mariners over Jackson Memorial

Asante Moorer scored four touchdowns, three of which came on the ground, as Toms River North defeated Jackson Memorial at home 33-23.

Jackson Memorial would efficiently march down the field on the opening possession, but be forced to settle for a field goal to open the scoring at 3-0.

They would then force the Mariners to punt, and get great field position starting at the 50.

However, QB Dan Barker was intercepted by Darrion Carrington – setting up Moorer’s first score of the night.

After Mike Husni scrambled to convert a third and long to Bryce Watts, Moorer burst to the end zone to put the Mariners up 7-3.

The Jaguars would quickly answer to start the second quarter when Mike Gawlik made a nice move on his way to the end zone – giving Memorial a 10-7 lead.

North would punt on the ensuing possession, before forcing the Jaguars into a fourth and short in their own territory. Jackson Memorial would fake the punt, and a great second effort on the run appeared to move the chains.

After a measurement, the ball was ruled short and TRN took over in great field position. The Jaguars defense had a chance to step up and hold the Mariners on a fourth and four, but Husni found Carrington to convert.

Moorer then set up a first and goal, before a Husni keeper put the Mariners in the end zone. The extra point was blocked and TRN led 13-10.

Jackson would get their chance with good field position on the next two possessions, but the North defense found their rhythm – forcing a punt and a turnover on downs before the half.

Moorer would get his second touchdown practically before the TRN marching band was off the field, as he went 65 yards up the middle on the first play of the second half! This score would put them up 20-10.

On their second possession of the half, the Jaguars were backed up and in desperate need of a spark. Gawlik provided that spark, ripping off a long run inside the ten before finishing the drive with a third-down scoring run.

At 20-17, the game was on. Gawlik took the field on defense for the Jaguars and appeared to make a critical stop on second down by tripping up Husni to bring up a pivotal third down.

Mike Husni would pull his best Aaron Rodgers impersonation, avoiding the rush brilliantly and stepping up to heave one down the left sideline. Moorer was on the other end of it for the long touchdown, and TRN took a 26-17 lead on his third TD.

The North defense would really find their footing in the second half, stuffing the Jackson run game and forcing Barker to beat them.

A three and out would give them the ball right back, and allow Moorer to find the end zone for the FOURTH time.

Now trailing 33-17, the Jaguars were in need of points. Barker would lead them on a long drive, converting a third and 17 along the way. After a wild sequence of events in the red zone, Memorial would face a fourth and goal.

Barker was pressured but threw off his back foot to Nick Papandrea for the touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, and the Jaguars still trailed 33-23.

Husni and the Mariners would take the ball down to the 20, killing the remaining clock for their third straight win.
