Hello Folks, after last weeks’ weather, it looks like we will finally get a chance to enjoy some exciting Shore Conference football. (staying dry for that matter) There are two games this week that NJSR will be attentively watching. The first will be Jackson Memorial at Toms River North. The second will be Point Boro at Central Regional. With that said, Ryan Wydra is enjoying the nice weather of Florida. Therefore, I will be giving you my picks for this week.
Jackson Memorial At Toms River North – 7PM
In a big A-South matchup, the Jaguars head to the campus of Toms River North to take on the Mariners. As we are nearly reaching the halfway point of the season, it is important to remember that each and every game from now until Week 8 are vital for power point standings. Therefore, with division title aspirations and hopes of securing a top seed in the playoffs; this game is pivotal for both teams.
With names like Dan Barker and Mike Gawlik, Jackson Memorial has used its lethal combination of speed and size to win football games. The Jaguars started out the season 3-0, and under normal circumstances, have the ability to generate big plays. However, it was a 2-0 loss to Brick Township last week in inclement weather in which the Jaguars experienced defeat.
Jackson Memorial’s last victory came in shutout fashion as they were able to pitch a shutout against Southern. In that game, Barker was able to throw touchdown passes of 22, 14, 5, and 2 yards. If the Jaguars are going to regain momentum and win this division, they will have to start on the road against a Toms River North team that is all but easy to defeat.
Toms River North
Like Jackson Memorial, Toms River North has played pretty well throughout the first four weeks of the season. The Mariners last A-South victory came against cross town rival Toms River South. In a game that featured an 80 yard TD Pass to Brice Watts, the Mariners cruised to a 55-20 victory. This was a big game for the Mariners giving them a large chunk of momentum heading into this game against Jackson Memorial.
After an early season loss to Brick Memorial, the Mariners have been able to play better defense. When it comes to the TRN offense, Mike Husni is where it starts! On his home turf, I expect him to be able to put up a good amount of points. The question in this game will be defense. It will be guys like Matt Tomasheck at Safety, and Pete LaQuaglia who will be eager to control both Barker and those Jackson Memorial RBs.
Jackson Memorial, 27 Toms River North, 20
This is a tough game to pick because both teams are extremely prepared for big games such as this one. The deciding factor will be Jackson Memorial rebounding from a tough loss that was only partially their responsibility. I expect the Jaguars to come out and score quickly. Toms River North will keep this game close with their play making abilities. However, I think Jackson Memorial will pull this one out and remain close behind Brick Township.
Pt Boro At Central – 7PM
There is nothing about this game that Shore football fans will not love. In a division that could be decided by one game, head to head competition will be very important. Both teams have aspirations to win B- South alongside the Lakewood Piners who are currently undefeated like Point Boro.
Here we are, it is Week Five and the Panthers remain undefeated. With that said, the Panthers have been resilient this season up to date. However, as we reach that half way point of the season, the Panthers must maintain this excellent level of play in order to finally reach the playoffs once again.
For Point Boro, it starts with the Husak Brothers. Noah and Nate Husak are a dynamic duo that can hurt the opposing defense with their legs. For Noah, his arm will be a huge factor against the Central defense. I expect the running game for Point Boro to match that of Central’s in this game. I also expect the Wide receivers to get involved in this game. Look for Devin Connelly to potentially catch a few passes out of the backfield while incorporating Gene Franceschini into that mix as well. Franceschini is also a big part of the special teams unit.
Defensively, the Panthers will need limit the big plays. Will the line be able to consistently put pressure on Mike Miserendino? Will the Panthers be able to hold Mike Bickford? These are all questions which will have to be proven if the Panthers want to win their fifth straight!
As I mentioned earlier, Central will have many of their big weapons on the field against Point Boro. Mike Miserendino is a very athletic Quarterback who is able to put together long drives. He will be looking to go to guys like Dennis Corbin in short to medium passing situations. The one area where Central can excel in is their passing game.
There is also no running back in the Shore that possesses downhill running abilities like Mike Bickford. He could be the deciding factor in a game that should be close for most of the way. Look for Central to really use the running game to their advantage. They will look to spread the field by creating physical battles one on one.
Defensively, the Eagles have a solid line and should be a challenge for the Point Boro. As we saw against Southern, late sacks could essentially turn the tide in field position.
Pt Boro, 23 Central, 20
I expect this game to be close. In a game that could come down to a field goal, I would have to take Pt Boro on this one. While Central defeated Pinelands last week, they have shown some areas of vulnerability throughout the season.
