A storm certainly brewed on and off the football field tonight. Spectators watched as the rain came down and noticed that their team was on the right path to victory. The Saint John Vianney Lancers took down their class A central rivals, the Rumson-Fair Haven Bulldogs Friday night by a score of 13-6. This win was huge for SJV showing that their offense was not going to be slowed down simply due to weather conditions.

For RFH, they were able to score early in this game in the first quarter. As effective as he has been early this season, Mike  O’Conner was able to take his bulldogs down the field and make it a 6-0 lead via a 3 yard TD run by O’Connor himself. The PAT was missed however, as the kick was drilled off the upright.

Late in the second SJV begins to see the sunshine. Their offense would get going via a 75 yard pass from Anthony Brown to Arque Ellington. I was able to talk to Ellington as he described to me how the offense was able to persevere through the tough playing conditions. On that he told me, “All week we were prepared to play in this weather and we didn’t want to change up anything because of it .. And it worked tonight”. This was something he said was important for his team tonight.
IMG_6130This was just an absolute perfect pass in conditions that were especially not suitable for throwing the ball. The score was now tied at 6 late in the second quarter. SJV would attempt the two point conversion instead of going for the PAT. However, the RFH defense would Deny them of the two as the score remained tied at 6. This would be the score going into the half.

The second half had a mixture of great defense and weather related issues. With the score tied at six a piece, RFH faced fourth down and attempted to punt it away to SJV. However, the Snap was not handled properly and SJV was able to takeover on downs with the short field in their advantage. Moments later after a few Anthony Brown runs, it was Calvin Beaty, who would play hero. He scored on a yard TD run to make it 12-6 SJV. Joe Rice was able to keep the momentum going with a successful PAT to make it 13-6.

It was now time for the SJV defense to go to work. After what appeared to be a botched kickoff, RFH had the short field to work with. It was then that the SJV defense was able to put together a goal line stand that would shift the momentum completely. It seemed as if every RFH opportunity was handled well defensively for SJV.

Another big play came late in the game. As RFH was driving, a huge offensive pass interference call pushed the Bulldogs back and at one point forced a second andthirty during the drive. Once again Ellington, praised his defense in such a big game, ” Everyone claims that we’re only an offensive powerhouse and never give credit to our defense and for the past couple of weeks we’ve really used that comment as motivation and proved a point to everyone. ” This is something that Ellington is especially proud of in the victory tonight.

With the 4th quarter winding down, it was Anthony Brown who was able to use his legs to convert a big 4th and 2 to wind down the clock. RFH was able to get possession of the ball ,however, SJV was able to melt the clock and a last second O’Conner run proved short. The Lancers are now 4-0 on the season. St John Vianney takes control of Class A Central.
