The NJSR Outstanding Player for Week 2 needs no introduction. Tim Santiago put on a performance for the ages on Friday night. The Quarterback once again proved why he is not only one of the best Quarterbacks in the Shore, but throughout the State. Right from the opening kickoff, Santiago was motivated to give his team an edge.
Remember, Brick Memorial came into Week 2 facing the same situation last year. They had a tough setback in the opening game against Brick Township. Head Coach Walt Currie decided to insert Santiago as the full time starter. The Mustangs responded with four straight victories, and a South Jersey Group V playoff appearence. Brick Memorial scored 28 points against eventual champion Cherokee.
Friday night’s game would be no different. This would be a make or break game for the Brick Memorial Mustangs. It was a must win to keep pace in the always tough Class A South, but it was Tim Santiago who would show up in a big way. Santiago led the charge and rallied his teammates to a 52-20 victory over rival Toms River North. Toms River North were the No 5 team in the NJSR Power Rankings for Week 2. This was a result that absolutely no one saw coming!
Tim Santiago had as unbelievable of a performance that you can get on the field. The Senior Captain torched the Mariners defense for 335 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns. Santiago scored on touchdown runs of 28, 46, 52, and 7 yards. The Senior also used his arm to put points on the board. Santiago found Running Back Eli Lavarin down the field for a 32 yard touchdown reception.
One thing is for sure, The Mustangs showed that they are a real contender in A South. The Mustangs have some more difficult games late in the season. They will play No 1 Jackson Memorial on the road. Brick Memorial will also have a non-divisional contest against No 3 Middletown South. Look for Brick Memorial to make a serious push for the playoffs!
