After losing a tough one to Ocean Township earlier in the week, the Panthers have won two straight games. The latest of victories coming Thursday afternoon in a 4-0 decision against the Pinelands Wildcats. The Panthers were able to get on the board early in this game, taking advantage of multiple opportunities in the first half. Along with great defense, the Panthers were able to hold off the few Pinelands attacks that they were able to generate throughout the contest.IMG_2307

The first two goals were scored within minutes of each other. About 8 minutes into the game, the Panthers were able to get on the board. A wonderful strike off the leg of forward Devon Wondolowski was enough to find the back of the net. Wondolowski always sets the example with high energy.  This would give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage. Carly Vetrini would be the next Panther to net a goal in the opening half of the game. This goal was delivered a minute after Wondolowski’s first goal. The play got the Panthers on the board.

With the first half winding down, the Panthers would not stop. They continued to put on the pressure. The team would go into the half with a 3-0 lead. Once again, it was Wondolowski who set the tone. She always comes up big when the Panthers need her most.  This time, she was able to put the Panthers up big in a Class B South divisional match up.

The second half would once again be controlled by the Panthers. They were able to limit Pinelands to three scoring opportunities.  Goalkeeper Amye Zalesky came up with a huge save in the second half of the game. Zalesky’s effort was able to keep Pinelands off the board. This swayed the momentum in the game as Pinelands could have cut the lead to 3-1.IMG_2289

As time was winding down, the Panthers could have been content with a three goal game. However, that was not the answer that Pt.Boro was going to give to the audience, or the rest of the Shore for that matter. They continued to apply the pressure. The team was able to extend the lead to 4-0. Erin Guilfoyle would score as time winded down off the assist from Vetrini.

Coach Mike Edolo was impressed on how his team played. He credited his team for never letting their aggressiveness down throughout the game. It was important for the Panthers to have a productive week. They are the favorites to repeat as Class B South Champions. The Panthers have only one loss on the season. The team suffered a setback against Ocean Twp. After a Non-Divisional loss, The Panthers will certainly regroup.

Pt Pleasant Boro will now travel to Lakewood. They will try to remain perfect in B South play. The team ultimately improved to 4-1 overall. The Panthers know they will have to continue to play tough, especially with a good Donovan Catholic team on the schedule for the 21st of September.

After the game,  I was able to catch up with Coach Edolo and star Amye Zalesky. They both discussed the win today, and how far this team can go throughout the season.
