It is never easy dealing with an injury, especially when your starting QB is announced to be inactive right before the start of a big opening game. With the news of George Pearson’s injury, it was time for Jake Burlew to suit up for the first time in 2015. Indeed, leading your team on to the field for opening day can bring many nerves for Quaterbacks. However, Jake Burlew came out and showed the Shore just how much talent this Matawan team has in store.

Burlew was sensational in this game. However, the biggest threat that came from the Junior Quaterback in his first varsity start was his legs. Burlew’s biggest run of the day measured 41 yards as he tightroped the sidelines against St. John Vianney. He also scored on a 14 yard TD run as well . All together he had four rushing attemps for 65 yards with 2 TDs to add to his resume for the first start of his career.

Burlew really showed off his arm strength throughout the game as well. He was able to connect with his receivers going 7-10 with 110 yards.

With the versatility that exists on the field for Matawan, they now know what they have in Junior Jake Burlew. Along with Sophomore QB George Pearson, these two can be used in a variety of ways going forward.

Burlew himself was very energetic in describing his first start saying, ” I felt comfortable out there because i knew my team had my back! My o-line blocked to the death for me and I knew there was no reason to worry. Coach Kaye and the team are believers in the phrase “next man up” and when we found out L.C couldn’t play, I had to step up and do whatever i could to help the team win. I was a little nervous before the game, but that first play when we got a completion to Devante Spann, all the nerves went away and i just played and had fun. It was a tough loss but we are gonna bounce back and learn from our mistakes and get ready to play Rumson Fair Haven” added Burlew after the game.

Although the Huskies did lose on Saturday, they did so with a lot of fight. This is something that they will bring with them when they play the Bulldogs of Rumson Fair Haven; a team Jake knows will come ready to play.
